Natia Gvianishvili – The privilege of coming out
From time to time I get phone calls from my readers that leave me speechless, amazed and astonished. Still, in this century, in 2020, we have not really made progress.
Someone received for her sixteenth birthday my book "Sagol" ("Purple") as a gift from her girlfriend. This is the first Hebrew lesbian novel about a love story between a radio announcer and her listener in Israel at the late 1980s, before the outbreak of regional broadcasting stations. The friend called me a few weeks ago to buy two copies of the book and also asked for dedications for both, which I was very happy to do. There was a pleasant conversation with the adolescent who understood what she was, and with her mother who supported her and was happy to pay for the books. After all, there is no reason that in Israel of 2020, parents will not support their offspring.
Yesterday, I got a phone call from the birthday girl who thanked me for writing the book. She had a million questions to ask and I was happy to answer them as best I could. After an entire hour of discussion, I know I left her with many more questions, ones she needs to answer herself. It is not my place to answer her questions instead of her, but she is the one who has to resolve them herself. I realized that her parents don't know what she is going through, and that the one who bought her the book is more than just her friend.
The conversation with her reminded me of a discussion I had more than twenty years ago with one of the first readers of my book. She, too, had a million questions to ask me, as if I was an expert on being a lesbian. Israel of that time, in the late 1990s, was very conservative, which has not really changed till these days. She was married to a man and had, and found out that she had fallen in love with her girlfriend, which greatly disturbed her peace and caused her a severe shake-up. Like all of us, those who discovered what they were at quite advanced ages after building a certain life according to social conventions that really did not include cohabitation with same-sex spouses. I did not know what to answer her. What suited me, did not really suit her. There was a huge gap in our needs, not to mention the fifteen years that differentiated us. My solutions were not hers. She was at the beginning of her life together with the man she married and with very small children, while I was already on my way out of my marriage. I could not give her answers to the things that occupied her, as those that occupied me were completely different.
In one sentence:
Since that conversation, we have had more discussions. I remember words she used to say in those conversations: "Look after me!" As if it was my job to keep my readers from the life they chose for themselves.
