בשבוע הספר האחרון (יולי 2021), היתה מכירה סיטונית של ספרים בזול מאוד (20-10 ₪ לספר). קניתי 50 ספרים שנראו לי מעניינים, בהם כמה, אחרי התלבטות רבה, קניתי מתוך סקרנות. חלק מאלה שנקנו בשל סקרנות הורידו לי את החשק לקרוא וחלק היו הפתעה נחמדה. הכלה מאיסטנבול היה הפתעה די מעניינת.

During the last book week (July 2021), there was a wholesale sale of books very cheaply (10-20 NIS per book). I bought 50 books that I found interesting, including some, after much indecision, I bought out of curiosity. Some of those bought out of curiosity took away my desire to read and some were a nice surprise. The Bride from Istanbul (İstanbullu Gelin) was a pretty interesting surprise.

שבת בבוקר, שנות התשעים, איני זוכרת בדיוק איזו שנה, אני נכנסת למטבח כדי להכין את ארוחת הבוקר. אמי יושבת בסלון, דבוקה לטלויזיה ואז עולים הצלילים העדינים, המצמררים, מגיעים לאוזני וממסמרים אותי למקומי. אני מאלצת את רגלַי לזוז אל הטלויזיה כדי לראות מי שר את המנגינה המדהימה הזו שגורמת לי לעור ברווז. אני מגלה שזה שיר הנושא של הטלנובלה "קציר החטאים". אני יודעת שאם אני חפצה בירושתה, אסור לי להשמיע הגה בשעה קדושה זו, בה אמי אינה מסירה את עיניה ממסך הטלויזיה כדי לקלוט את העלילה. אחרי כמה דקות בהן אני מנסה להבין את שמתרחש על המסך ואיני מצליחה להתחבר לעלילה, אני נסוגה למטבח. אין לי כוח לשטויות.

Saturday morning, the nineties, I don't remember exactly what year, I go into the kitchen to prepare breakfast. My mother sits in the living room, glued to the TV and then the delicate, spine-chilling sounds come to my ears, nailing me to my place. I force my legs to move to the TV to see who is singing this amazing tune that causes me goosebumps. I find this to be the theme song of the telenovela "Harvest of Sins" (Cosecharás tu siembra). I know, that if I want her inheritance, I must be silent at this holy hour, when my mother does not take her eyes off the TV screen to pick up the plot. After a few minutes in which I try to understand what is happening on the screen and I can't connect to the plot, I retreat to the kitchen. I have no strength for nonsense.

בדרך כלל, איני נוהגת לחוות דעתי על דברים שלא קראתי או לא צפיתי בהם, כך שאין לי מושג כלשהו על טיבה של הסדרה הזו, מלבד העובדה שאמי היתה מכורה לה. היה לנו טעם שונה. אהבתי את הסדרות האמריקאיות המצוינות, לטעמי, "דאלאס" ו"שושלת". יותר מאוחר, שודרה "היפים והאמיצים", בה צפיתי בשקיקה רבה (בעיקר בשל השחקנית המהממת האנטר טיילו) עד שלב מסוים בו זה התחיל לשעמם אותי, בעיקר משום שהאנטר טיילו לא הופיעה שם. סדרות ארגנטינאיות, שהיו פופולריות מאוד בישראל, ממש לא עניינו אותי, בעיקר בגלל השפה – אני שונאת ספרדית.

Usually, I don't tend to comment on things I have not read or watched, so I have no idea about the nature of this series, other than the fact that my mother was addicted to it. We had a different taste. I loved the American series (excellent to my taste), "Dallas" and "Dynasty". Later, "The Bold and the Beautiful" was aired, which I watched with great eagerness (mainly due to the stunning actress Hunter Tylo) until a certain point where it started to bore me, mostly because Hunter Tylo did not appear in it. Argentine series, which were very popular in Israel, did not really interest me, mainly because of the language – I hate Spanish.

מזה שנים רבות אין לי טלויזיה ואין לי מנוי לכבלים או ללַוְיָן. מצאתי תחליפים אחרים לצפיה בסרטים מצוינים, כמו באתר המעולה של דוקוסטרים וסינמטק תל אביב. בשנה שעברה, שנת הקורונה, שודרו סרטי פסטיבל חיפה ופסטיבל הקולנוע הגאה באינטרנט, כך שצפיתי בהם בכיף וגם כתבתי עליהם בַּבְּלוג. חבל שלא שידרו את הסרטים באינטרנט גם השנה. כך יצא, שלא היה לי מושג ולא הגיע לידיעתי דבר כמעט על טלנובלות ומה שהגיע – התנדף מיד מתודעתי. על "הכלה מאיסטנבול" קראתי פעם שזו אחת הטלנובלות הכי נצפות בישראל. נזכרתי בזה, כשברשימת הספרים הזולים הופיע ספר בשם זה ושאלתי את עצמי למה שארצה לקרוא ספר שעשו ממנו טלנובלה. יחד עם זאת, הייתי סקרנית לדעת וגם מוכנה לשלם בשביל זה 10 ₪. קראתי את הספר והופתעתי לטובה. ועל זה נאמר: "אל תסתכל בקנקן, אלא במה שיש בו".

For many years I have not had a TV and I don't have a cable or satellite subscription. I found other substitutes for watching great movies, like on the excellent website of Docostream and the Tel Aviv Cinematheque. Last year, the year of the Corona, the movies of the Haifa Festival and the LGBT Film Festival were broadcast on the internet, so I watched them with great fun and also wrote about them in this blog. It's a shame that thy didn't broadcast on the internet this year as well. So, it turned out that I had no idea and almost nothing came to my knowledge about telenovelas, and what came – immediately evaporated from my consciousness. I once read about "The Bride from Istanbul" that it is one of the most watched telenovelas in Israel. I remembered this when a book by that name appeared on the list of cheap books, and I asked myself why would I want to read a book that was made into a telenovela. At the same time, I was curious to know and also willing to pay 10 NIS for it. I read the book and was pleasantly surprised. This is the classic case of the saying: "Don't judge a book by its cover".

קשה מאוד לסלק דעות קדומות, אך התאמצתי והתישבתי לקרוא את הספר, שנקרא במקור "בחזרה לחיים". חבל שבהוצאת הספר בארץ לא שמרו על השם המקורי כדי לא להטעות את הרוכשים. כבר מהעמוד הראשון אמרתי לעצמי שזה ממש לא טלנובלה, זה ספר שנראה מעניין מאוד. הפסיכיאטרית, ד"ר גולסרן בודאיג'אולו, שזה ספרהּ החמישי, מגוללת בו את מהלך טיפוליה בכמה ממטופליה בקליניקה שהקימה. העלילה הראשית היא הטיפול שמעניקה הדוקטורית באָנָא, בתה של סוראיה (שמגלמת בסדרת הטלנובלה את הכלה מאיסטנבול), הסובלת קשות מבעיות נפשיות (שבסדרה, אין להן זכר) ובין לבין, מתוארים מקרים נוספים. בסדרה, לקחו את שלד הסיפור של אָנָא, שינו אותו לחלוטין ועשו מזה טלנובלה. חברה, שצפתה באדיקות בסדרה, סיפרה לי כמה קטעים מהעלילה ונוכחנו לדעת שהספר שונה מאוד. לדבריה, בסדרה לקחו רק את הדברים החיוביים (נו, זו טלנובלה) ופיתחו אותם. ישנן דמויות שונות מאוד מאיך שהן מופיעות בספר.

It is very difficult to dispel prejudices, but I made an effort and sat down to read the book, which was originally called "Back to Life" (hayata Dön). It is a pity that the publisher of the book in Israel did not keep the original name so as not to mislead the buyers. From the very first page I told myself that this is not really a telenovela, this is a book that looks very interesting. The psychiatrist, Dr. Gülseren Budayıcıoğlu, that this is her fifth book, depicts in it the process of her treatment of some of her patients at the clinic she set up. The main plot is the treatment given by the Dr. to Ana, Suraya's daughter (who plays in the telenovela series the bride from Istanbul), who suffers severely from mental problems (which in the series have no trace), and in between, other cases are described. In the series, they took the skeleton of Ana's story, changed it completely and made it a telenovela. A friend, who was devoutly watching the series, described to me a few episodes from the plot, and we came to know that the book is very different. According to her, in the series they took only the positive things (well, it's a telenovela) and developed them. There are very different characters from how they appear in the book.

הספר, בגדול, די מעניין, אם כי כעורכת ספרים (גם את זה אני עושה), הייתי מיעצת לסופרת להתרכז בעלילה של אנא, להרחיבה ולוותר על שאר המקרים, משום שהם מיותרים ואינם תורמים לקריאה השוטפת, אלא הסחות דעת די משעממות. למה משעממות? כי התאור שלהם קצר מדי, סתמי, לא מפותח מספיק ובעיקר – אין הן משרתות את העלילה. מצאתי את עצמי קוראת די בקוצר רוח את החלקים המיותרים הללו ומחכה להגיע לקורותיה של אנא. הייתי גם ממליצה להרחיב בסוף את התהליך של אנא; זה קצר מדי, לטעמי, ונראה לי כאילו נעשה בחפזון כדי לסיים כבר את כתיבת הספר.

The book, in general, is quite interesting, though as a book editor (I do this as well), I would advise the author to concentrate on Ana's plot, expand it and give up the rest of the cases, because they are unnecessary and don't contribute to the fluent reading, but are quite boring distractions. Why boring? Because their description is too short, trivial, not developed enough, and most importantly – they do not serve the plot. I found myself quite impatiently reading these unnecessary parts and waiting to get to Ana's experiences. I would also suggest to expand at the end the Ana's process; it is too short, in my opinion, and it seems to me as if it was done hastily to finish already writing the book.
