Cantor Marie Betcher – Maoz Tsur
Woman, I can hardly express

We Came to Drive the Darkness Away
Hanukkah Hey Ya!
Again, we came to drive away the darkness. Suddenly, it seems that only a very short time ago we celebrated Hanukah and now, another year had passed. So fast… The years fly away from me. Sneaking between my fingers. I'm starting to feel my age. Arza says that age is delight (in Hebrew), therefore, at my age, in my delight. I wish.
These candles that I light. With great pleasure I would sing Maoz Tzur, if a lovely woman would join me [how can I express that I wish her to be a woman, not a schlong?]. I feel uncomfortable to sing off-key by myself. The flames are dancing. With delight? Before Hagar, lighting the candles was a sort of a habit, not really a tradition, since tradition means to be dedicated, and I wasn't much of a follower of tradition. Hagar purred substance to lighting the candles, the only holiday we celebrated together. She purred substance to my life as well. For me, lighting the candles and singing the prayer, is part of the tradition I would like to preserve, even if I'm not religious as she is. It is impossible to cover it all and describe the gratefulness I felt celebrating Hanukkah with her at the time. A lot of time, I can say – for many years – I hadn't have such fun and pleasure. She made the holiday pleasant. Sweetened my life.
Hadassah Berne – Maoz Tzur
She took me to Modi'in. Two women walking, holding hands, assembled within their bubble, not paying attention to the curious gazes sending to them. The sense of your sweet hand clinging to mine is making me shiver. Even today. It was a nice day, pleasant. The flowers of the Helichrysum sanguineum popped out everywhere, smiling at our love. They beamed warmth. Everything seemed to be so tranquil. I was at the most correct place for me. But you…
On our way back, 19 years of John Lennon's murder has been commemorated. They played "our" song: Woman, I can hardly express…
John Lennon – woman
Woman of mine, more five years had passed since then. Like a dream. Time had dripped, run out. I am conducting myself within a dream, flooded with cravings. Spinning an imaginary dreidel as wishing to turn the wheel back. Will you come to drive my darkness away?

The Eighth Candle
During my life I fell in love with women a few times, without knowing what I was, and probably they didn't know what they were either, since none of us initiated. We lived in darkness. A week ago, on the first candle, Orit, love of my life, called me on the phone. We were not in touch for six years and suddenly, out of the blue, this Hanukkah miracle. And, as usual, I got a story out of it.
It's the eighth candle tonight, and I wonder where the holidays flew. Was it joyous? Not so sure. For years there has been a lack of elation, joy. The situation is on the face (an expression in Hebrew, meaning: bad). Exactly one week ago, just before lighting the first Hanukkah candle, I heard your voice, warm, longing, loving. I couldn't believe my ears. I was wondering: is that you? Perhaps it was somebody else I've talked to once and that's why the voice sounds familiar to me, warming my heart. My body as well. I miss you, I miss those innocent days, when we loved, touched, and were there for each other.
You point out that we have to meet, and ask how I am, what I do. I inform you that I have a spot in the radio and actually I was preparing it right now for this evening's broadcast. Your voice is smiling, you say that you are proud of me. If only you knew where did this proud led me to… You ask what this spot is about. I simply answer that it's a programme for the gay and lesbian community and my spot is about lesbians. For me, it's very clear. My life is clear now. A few seconds are left hanging in the air hesitatively, and then you sigh and utter: "Oy va'avoy!" (in Hebrew: "Woe is me!") in a kind of anxiety, renunciation. Could it be that I recognized an aversion in your voice?
You regain your composure quickly and ask since when is it. I am amazed. Have your eyes been blinded by the obvious? Did you forget that I told you at the time that my novel "Sagol" (Purple) was written about us, about my yearnings, that it was my love letter to you? I can't help but wonder if this was the reason why you dissolved our relationship.
Elegantly, you smooth things out, moving on and change the topic. I don't insist. I'm smiling to myself acceptingly. You haven't change. The hopes that arose in me at the sound of your voice, that perhaps after all these years you have finally come home, like me, that you understood and came to terms with what you are, what I am, that you rang to call me to you… These hopes faded away for me. Your time to accept yourself, me, us, probably hasn't come yet.
Tonight, the eighth candle of Hanukkah. Have you been for real of did I hallucinate your voice in the candles?
