A Kosher Pesach Story
The clock is ticking the time away. Tic-tock-tic-tock. Such a dynamic clock. Time I have. Where is she now? What does she do? I guess she is smiling her way to the pulpit, among the members of her congregation, stopping here and there, politely shaking hands, asking how is that person, showing interest in another, her heart is tense, hoping they won't ask again. Let them not ask. I'm sure they are not asking anymore. Actually, what do I know?
Years ago, I happened to attend a Seder at a liberal synagogue in a foreign city which was not very welcoming. After the meal, coffee with milk was served. I assume that the expression of wonder on my face was obvious even from a distance, since she came up to me to ask if everything was OK and how was I doing in the sense of how was I coping. "Well, excellent", I replied, "but there is one thing that puzzles me: how come you're having coffee with milk here immediately after a meat meal? Doesn't one have to wait at least four hours or so?"
"Six", she answered, "but they are very liberal."
They, not her. She is from the Orthodox stream, but agreed to serve as a Rabba for them, so she told me. "Mind you, don't think that I'm changing their habits. It's important for me to see that the parish will continue to exist and thrive and it really doesn't bother me when each one has their own interpretation according their own understanding. There are a lot of more important things in life than to be punctilious with the 613 mitzvoth (commandments)."
"Oh", I responded quite doubtfully, "you must be from Beit Hillel." Being secular, I thought I was brilliant.
"Depends. There are things that are important to me and I refer to them as Beit Shammai, but never out of 'self-sacrifice'. I don't see anything worth being killed for. Life is more important." She took my hand and led me to her table. "Here, there's no milk on my table", she flashed her heart-warming smile.
Since then, her hand has not left mine. The congregation hasn’t even lifted an eyebrow at the sight of their Rabba sharing her life with a woman as a spouse, on the contrary – I became a Rabanit, the Rabba's wife. I have adjusted.
I taught Hebrew, I served the Rabba, I studied Rabanut (to be a Rabba). I graduated and was ordained. And then…
"You’re not really thinking of going to live there, right?" The anger in her heart trickled into her voice, reflecting within her beautiful honey-like eyes, which I loved.
"Why not? You are coming with me, of course, as my spouse." It was clear to me that she would follow me, since I stayed for her. Now it's my time.
"How could I? This is my congregation. It's not possible for me to abandon it. A Rabba is not for a term of a few-years, it's for life."
"What 'for life'? Are you going to be trapped here until you are one hundred and twenty?"
"I'm not going, I'm already here. And no, I don't see it as 'trapped', on the contrary – the position is fascinating, the people are nice, I'm happy here."
She was happy. Me? Not completely. I loved her with all my heart and soul, but I also wanted to spread my wings, to establish a career for myself, not to be sheltered in her shadow. Although she was my soul mate, still we were not one entity, we were individuals. But there's no place to make a living for a couple of Rabbas who share their life together.
It's only for a year, on trial, it's not too bad, I tried to comfort myself while embarking my own independent path. True, we won't be together on the holidays, but we'll find a way. I'm sure of it. Or not… Our cravings did not succeed in bridging the gap between life and the heart’s desire.
I loved my work, even if it was in the Diaspora. Even when my longing for her burned within my heart. Our chats deep into the night, decreased with the passing time into just lighting the Shabbat candles together, and later we barely managed to say a brief Chag Same'ach. I adjusted to living on my own. And then…
"It's from the hospital. Your mother has been admitted here today…"
A few hasty phone calls, quickly packing two suitcases, I'm on the waiting list, although I explained the cause for the urgency, despite me emphasizing my title as Rabba. If there's no room to fit in a pin, how would I get in?
Thank G-d, there's a place. It seems that my mother helps me to get to her. I succeeded in getting there on time to be with her.
My mother's house, the same as I remembered. Almost. How many years wasn’t I here? The curtains are different. She changed them this year. The walls emit an odour of fresh colour, of cleanliness, renewal. I put my luggage in the spare room, which once was mine as a child. Today, I'm a guest. It's not my home anymore. Where is my home?
I hurry to the hospital. My mother gazes at me, her eyes tenderly smile at me. I was waiting for you, she says silently, I didn't think you'd come.
I'm getting up from the Shiv'ah to keep the Pesach as best I can. Be happy on your holydays and only joyful. How is it possible?
