Astrud Gilberto – You Didn't Have To Be So Nice
I haven't heard that sound of bells on the radio for years, years. And suddenly I heard "The Girl from Ipanema", while the presenter noting that this is the song most associated with her. Maybe it's so, but for me, the song most associated with her, which I listen to a lot on YouTube, is the song above, even though it's her version of the one by The Lovin' Spoonful. I think this is the first song of hers I heard on the radio as a child. I immediately knew it was not something good and opened Wikipedia. At the end of the song, the broadcaster mentioned the fact of her death at the age of 83.

I like listening to Brazilian music. If I remember correctly (memory does not serve me well at my age…), the first song I heard on the radio (there was radio, young generation!), was Gal Costa's "Trem Das Onze" ("The 11 o’clock Train"). It's the kind of song that gets to me the first time I hear it, sometimes even from the first notes. I have a lot of such songs. Brazilian music was played on the radio more and more and there was even a show called "A Beautiful Tropical Country" with Brazilian songs translated into Hebrew.
I was present at Astrud Gilberto's show in Israel. Although I googled thoroughly, I could not find the date of the performance. I remember the show, but not the date. It was also the first show of a female singer from abroad that I attended. There was supposed to be a warm-up performance. I remember very well (it's interesting what things get stuck in us…) that at the beginning of the show, a group of dancers came on stage and started dancing. Only a few minutes passed and the sound of dissatisfaction arose from the crowd. It grew louder, to the point of demanding with loud shouts get the "nonsense" off the stage and bring up the singer for whom we had gathered here. The dancers' performance was stopped and the crowd continued to shout. Someone came on stage, perhaps the producer, who asked why we were behaving in such a barbaric manner. The audience shouted back that we came to hear Astrud Gilberto and not others in her place. The man replied that this is how it is in a show – there is a warm-up band and only after that, the singer comes on. "So why wasn't it published?" Someone shouted angrily. "Of course they published!" answered the man. "I did not see!" She replied to him. In the end, after the man went backstage and returned about fifteen minutes later, he announced: "In an exceptional way, the singer agreed to precede her performance and she will appear right away." The loud applause she was welcomed by us still rings in my ears.
I think I have several records and CDs of hers in the vast store of music I have acquired over the years. There used to be no YouTube and therefore, except on the radio and later on the television, when you were lucky and the music you liked while you were listening was broadcast, the only way to listen to it was by purchasing it. I loved hearing her singing, both in Portuguese (how I love this beautiful language!!!) and in English. Her voice was wonderful. Wonderful indeed!

What I liked about her, that she didn't sing only in one style. Although she was defined as a "singer in bossa-nova and jazz styles", she also composed herself. I recommend listening to her songs on her YouTube channel.
