A new exhibition coming soon; this time, the theme is urban and nature landscape images of Hadera today and in the past. I have thousands of suitable photos.
This time, we, the artists, have no expenses. This time, it was commissioned by Kupat Holim Meuhedet, so all the expenses are theirs. We "only" donate our creations. The truth is, I did not intend to participate. Although it is a public place, a lot of movement of people (though mostly sick), the expectation is for great exposure, but from my experience so far, it does not bring a livelihood. I have a few works still hanging at the outdoor gallery, in the piazza of Hadera, a public place and bustling by all accounts, but even though they have been hanging there for quite some time – from February 9th – I have not received any job offers from this exhibition.
The ugly method of exploiting the artists and not paying them for their participation, but on the contrary – we are the ones who have to pay for the expenses of producing the exhibitions – has exhausted itself for me. I proved to myself that my photographs are worth being exhibited, I have no need for further proof. I decided to participate only at exhibitions where I don't have to pay for the "right" to display my work. I am quite annoyed by the audacity to ask us to contribute our works. Why did I still decide to participate this time? The curator asked nicely and I told myself it didn't cost me, so maybe this would also be an opportunity anyway to grab somebody's attention to order my photos and pay for them. Maybe it will be an opening for making more livelihood. I wish!
The coincidences in my life amaze me over and over again. Someone on Facebook talked to me today about the fun at our age, where we can still enjoy all kinds of adventures. Me and adventure do not really connect, this is not my way. I replied to her that my best adventure today is to go out and photograph some places in the city in favour of the upcoming exhibition. Last Friday, the adventure was going out to the hairdresser and shopping. Definitely dangerous in today's conditions.
The curator advised me where to take the photos. I guess it's in line with what she's missing for the exhibition. I didn't really feel like going out. Due to the Corona, I try to avoid it as much as possible. Less getting out of the house – less chance of getting infected, which means more health. I postponed the photographing to the afternoon, so that the sun would be less strong and the traffic around the market square that I was going to take photos of, would lessen to. At the same time, my lack of desire gnawed at me and I thought of giving up photographing today and postponing to tomorrow. Usually, I don't like to postpone things and I prefer to do my tasks as fast as possible and not carry them with me, but when there is no will – there is no will. I was on the verge of completely giving up photographing in the afternoon, when a power outage came down on us and shut down any work I could do on the computer. The universe has spoken. I had no excuse to postpone the matter.
I geared up with the best means of protection: the mask and the clothes with which I usually go out on the street these days – clothes that I have no problem washing a million times to the point of abrasion. I save my best clothes for events after the Corona. I hope it does not take us too long to get rid of this pandemic. I went out to the photo sites. The city was full of people walking around. Everyone was with masks, but for quite a few the masks hung on their chin, as if it were necessary to protect it. When I see someone in front of me with a mask on their chin, I hurry to move to the other side. For me, even two meters will not help me here. I prefer to be on the safe side. That is to say, as far as possible from these irresponsible people.
People sat on benches. Usually, at this time of the afternoon (18 and up), when the dusk wind blows and cools the hot day, almost all the benches are crowded. Usually with people of advanced age, around 70 and up. Today it was not. I don't know if this is typical, although I tend to believe so, because the Corona is still raging. People kept their distance between them at the benches they sat on. People sat at a distance from each other, each at a different end of the bench. Couples sat next to each other, of course. This could be seen clearly – who is a couple and who is one. In fact, I did not think about it so much while settling in to take the photos, but on the way back, when the scene repeated itself with the people scattered on the benches instead of these being crowded as in the days I knew before in Corona, suddenly the understanding came. I have a double take usually, it is not unusual for me.

"Madam!" I heard someone on a secluded bench yelling at someone on another bench, far away from her (you can see them in the picture). "Did you hear? The electricity is back!"
"Huh?" The other shouted at her. "What did you say? I didn't hear!"
The first one brought her hands to her mouth in the form of a speaker and shouted louder: "Now they said – the electricity is back!"
"Oh, Thanks!" The other's eyes lit up, "great! I was already afraid it would last a long time!"
"Is the electricity back on?" I confirmed with the first one.
"Yes," she replied, "it was just announced."
I looked at my watch. "Not bad, only about half an hour, maybe forty minutes. It's good it came back."
"You can go back to the air conditioner now," she said, shaking her head in relief.
I nodded for her. I don't have an air conditioner, I have a breeze coming from the windows in the apartment.
In one sentence:
Afternoon of photography. It was nice.
