You know that I am not religious at all, but would rather keep the tradition I was educated and raised upon (so it won't run away from us), except for what is inappropriate for me and my worldview, such as the exclusion of women and other problems alike from the twisted brain of the unnecessary males among us.
מפי רבא רפורמית בלונדון למדתי את האימרה הבאה, המבטאת את השקפת היהדות על החגים: "They tried to kill us, they didn't succeed, let's eat".
Jewish holidays are food-based. From a reformer Rabba in London, I learned the following statement, which expresses the Jewish view about our holidays: " They tried to kill us, they did not succeed, let's eat". That sums it all, doesn't it? Every holiday and its traditional food and for me, who loves to cook and as many diners as possible, it is great. I remember that in my youth, I saw in one of the foreign series, that the in police stations they chew donuts, oy vey, as a daily act, and I was surprised, because it is a dish typical of our Chanukah, not a gentile one and on weekdays. But every nation and its customs. We are tolerant and tolerate what is possible, mainly when it does not involve harming us – on that we stand bravely against and fight back whenever we can for the cause of destroying male violence against us and let's say Awomen. men should also say this instead of Amen, since we had enough men all over the place.
As you know, the main dish on Passover is matzah. About two weeks ago, while shopping at Shufersal Deal in Hadera, I came across a matzah package offered for around NIS 27-28. Why around? Because either it was NIS 26.90 or NIS 27.90, it's impossible to remember exactly and that's part of misleading the public, but what's new there? It doesn't matter to me, because although no chametz is eaten at Passover in my place, it still doesn't mean that I have to pay an exorbitant price on a matzah package. Tradition is a nice, but it is more important to save and calculate our budget wisely and responsibly. I told myself that there's enough time, and as Pessach approaches, prices may fall. In addition, I've been fortunate lately and things are rolling out pretty well for me, so I'm optimistic, as usual.
Yesterday I got into another network, after a kind neighbour took me there and I was pleasantly surprised. How is the saying: "Any delay is for the best", right? So good that I delayed and did not rush to reach out to my wallet to pull out the plastic, because instead of the originally price of the matzah package that was 23.90 NIS, and at the checkout I got 5 NIS discount (and not because I have beautiful eyes, but all buyers got, with a limit of 2 packs per purchase), so I only paid NIS 18.90. Not happiness? Not gladness? In addition, the soy milk I buy at that Shufersal Deal costs me NIS 11.90, and here I only paid NIS 9.99. Wonderful, isn't it? Here I was already in utmost ecstasy, as if Simchat Beit HaShoeivah came and landed on us for the best towards Passover, not in its season.
I do not mention the halvah, which in Shufersal was sold only three months ago at NIS 10 and now the price has risen to NIS 12.90. An unparalleled audacity! And why? Because the tycoon can. So, we, the consumers, can too, and our purchasing power is still in our hands and no one can force us to consume products that the tycoon has decided cheekily to raise their price without any justification, so we are staying away from his network. So I didn't buy halvah at the Shufersal Deal as a protest. Maybe after the holiday its price will drop (one can always hope…). Besides, Passover at the gate (approaching) and this is considered chametz for legume-eaters. I do eat certain legumes, so it's not a disaster for me to not nosh halvah on Passover.
Maybe I'm dealing with pennies here, but deal with a penny as you would with a fortune, and when pennies are penned – sometimes someone can come out with some profit. Not much, but enough to gladden the soul with the savings that's been saved, for which one can buy something nice for the lovely grandchildren towards the holiday. How would they know they have a grandmother otherwise?
Matzah package
As I march calmly with my cart that was getting filled with delicacies for the holiday, a religious man catches me (a Kippah on one's head, even if it's knitted, still indicates his tendency these days, right?), and updates me joyfully that he has been wandering around for some time in search of matzot, but so far he failed, so he asked me with awe and reverence where did I fish the package I have in my cart. I remind you, I'm not religious, yes? So I didn't think about the paradox about where I found the matzot earlier, but now, in light of the chat with the person wearing the Kippah, it suddenly came to mind that the place where the store arrangers chose to place the kosher items for Pessach, is a little bit "problematic", if not to say the explicit word: "strange". How can I instruct an observant Jew to gather Passover kosher products in the chametz area?
"There," I point my finger at the corner where the bread and its products dwell.
"What, where the bread is?" He asks, puzzled.
"Yes," I reply, "they probably didn't have another place to put the matzot." I felt unpleasant, me!
"And I searched the whole store, just not there!" He declares. "It didn't think it would be there!"
Neither did I, as a matter of fact, only that as a secular, it doesn't matter to me whether it's touched the chametz or not, I don't destroy it for the holidays. I have pastas and other chametz in the cupboard, no one touches them during the whole Passover, because what is important to me as a person who keeps my people's tradition is not to eat real chametz. One or more crumbs that sticks to some product doesn't really ruin for me the sanctity of the kosher holiday. Tradition is important, not the pursuit of crumbs.
The shopping center blows bubbles in the air
Interestingly, earlier in the day, we visited some patients at Laniado Hospital in Netanya, where the guards his inquired us as to whether there were any foodstuffs in our bags. It seems that already from now, any external food is allowed to be brought into this religious hospital, that is Kosher for the Mehadrin (strictly kosher), and no food is sold in the food stores inside – only drinks. A chametz fast has been imposed on the public before the holiday. To say it's dumb? So here I said it. And what would be their next move? To order us to step aside and shake our clothing before we even enter the hospital to fulfil an important mitzvah? Because how could they be sure that we didn't eat a sandwich or a falafel before we got there and the crumbs didn't wander with us hidden in our clothes?
