Homemade breakfast
"Wanna fast with me?" she asks on our date for breakfast in a café on the eve of Yom Kippur.
"Why fast?" After all, I fast between meals, why should I fast a whole day? The amazement in my voice, in my eyes and in my whole being is evident.
The same with her. All her being turns before my eyes into someone completely different than I thought she was. It turns out that a short Skype conversation is not enough to figure somebody out. "You don't fast?"
"Not even a slow," I answer, not so sure she will understand what I said.
To my surprise, a smile appears on her lips, one that acknowledges the wittiness ('nice, she understood', I tell myself), but it is immediately erased to the detriment of a stern expression. "Aren't you Jewish?" The scolding in her voice was well received in my mind.
I give her a piercing look. "Are you serious?" I answer with a question, which means I'm definitely Jewish.
In our chat on Skype, which I insisted on after she contacted me on the dating site, we did not talk about religion or politics. A mistake, as far as I'm concerned, that will not be repeated. She answered the basic qualities I'm looking for in a spouse: she said she likes to dance (those who don't like to dance, don't like to live, to be happy and aren't optimistic). She said that she, like me, starts the morning with a full meal (those who don't, I don't have the strength for. Cereal is not considered a full breakfast in my book, but just a snack). I asked her about the music she likes and she, like me, doesn't want a relationship with someone who listens to operas so that her ears don't hurt. She also prefers heat over cold, spring and summer (the joyful seasons) over autumn and winter (the gloomy ones). It seemed to me that she had potential.
Maybe it's nice to say that you don't judge people for their opinions (women as well, probably), but this is not true in reality. In real life, it is unpleasant and uncomfortable to be with a person with extreme views, who is not willing to hear (not to mention tolerate) opinions other than his own, and worse – tries to impose them on others. It is impossible to communicate with such a person if you want to be free to express your opinions openly.
My mother used to tell me that it was wrong for me to make up my mind about people after meeting them once and refuse to see them again. As a child, I did listen to her and gave a second chance, which turned out to be unsuccessful. After several times of bad experiences, I realized that I should trust what I felt. Someone I knew told me that I reject people and it's a shame. That was her opinion and she thought she was right. Although she was right in the first part of what she said, that I reject people, but not in the word shame. It's really not a shame to protect yourself from dreks, from negative people who don't live well with themselves, from those who don't know (or don't want to) how to be nice, those who will never look for the good qualities in others, but emphasize the bad with all their might.
"Perhaps she is a good woman after all," someone, whose ears had to endure my lamentation for not finding the right woman for me again, tried to defend her. She was my friend before; now, she became just someone. I didn't understand how she could even think good of her, as she didn't know her at all.
"You're not serious!" I was shocked. "How can she be good if she tries to impose her customs on others?!"
"Are you sure she tried to force them on you?" The someone insisted.
"I'm putting the deodorant!" I informed her. "There's no point in us continuing this conversation." With friends like her, who needs enemies? When I share my feelings with someone, I expect her to hear them and not respond, because she doesn't know the person I was talking about. I wanted to share, not hear a stupid response from her. I didn't expect empathy (no need to exaggerate), but neither did I expect her trying to "understand" the other side. Someone comes and shares with you, why are you rambling about things that have no basis, that you don't know at all?
Because I ended the conversation at that point, I didn't have time to tell her the rest. "Of course I'm serious," the unfulfilled potential answered me with determination. In our Skype chat, she did not wear a head covering. For our meeting at the café, she chose to show up with a colourful shmate on her head. For me, as a hat lover, a head covering can also be nice, but not as a symbol of religion.
"I want to understand, are you religious?" I don't usually guess, so I try to ask explicitly in the hope that the answer will also be clear. "If so, then it's a shame you hid it on Skype." As far as I'm concerned, this is concealment of facts, but I closed my mouth with all my might so that the words would not escape from my lips while wondering how a religious person (a woman included) found it appropriate to meet in a café on the eve of Fasting Kippur instead of waving a poor Tarnegol Kaparot (atonement rooster) over her head.
"Do you have anything against religious people?" She was very cheeky.
With all my efforts to keep my self-control, it was beyond my strength. I am not violent, but I felt that if I stayed in her presence for another second – I would not be able to control my hand that longed to make its mark on her cheek and was a step away from executing. There are creatures that awaken a side in you that you don't want.
I got up from my place slowly, restraining myself with the last of my strength and without looking at her, I went to the cash register. "Which table are we at?" I asked the friendly waiter who took our order a few minutes ago.
"Is there a problem?" His face expressed concern.
"Not with you," I reassured him. 'I have a problem with the person I sat with,' I wanted to tell him, but held back. Why burden him? "I have to go and I wanted to cancel our order. If they have already started preparing it, then I will pay for it and you will serve it to the woman sitting there."
Someone picked up the order from the kitchen window and looked at the waiter. "An Israeli breakfast," she announced.
The waiter looked at me and spread his hands to the sides in sympathy with my situation. "It's fine," I said in resignation, taking the credit card out of my wallet. Sometimes we have to pay tuition fees. My late mother called it "Rebbe Gelt".
A sentence from the heart:
There is a difference between hate and detesting, and contempt too. I don't hate them, but I certainly detest and despise those who think that if they believe in something – they have an obligation to impose their beliefs on others instead of keeping their noses only in their own lives.
