Last week started well and ended not quite well. Of all the places where anti-Semitism is inherently prevalent in society – the hard news of attacking Jews has arrived from Sydney. Australia has never been like that. It always welcomed strangers and aliens who came to build themselves and their future in this convenient immigrant state. Bondi elders don't remember such thing. No matter how much they scratched their skulls, and even vigorously, to try to dredge up such similar event – they didn't succeed.
Jazmin has been visiting Sydney for almost a year. The word visiting is exaggerated and quite inaccurate, because by all indications it seemed that she had settled there and has no intention of returning. I wonder in her ears how does it feel to come across such a thing in the country you've long ago adopted. In Israel, too, we have not really become accustomed to terrorism, but it is our state, the state of the Jewish people, it is our country and we are not aliens in it (even though it sometimes seems that way, according to the government's conduct).
Australians have always been known for their comfortable temperament and tolerance for the foreigner and the alien, and they have opened their country to all with a warm welcoming. The Jewish community was also welcomed with open arms and we all remember from history the nice easy-going Australian soldiers who enlisted in the cause for world peace. A peaceful, relaxed, welcoming and without malicious intentions on anyone. Pure hearted and deeds people.
It is difficult to understand this delusional thing, how a person innocently walks on the street and suddenly the dark ones attack him and beat the crap out of him till bleeding, up to the threshold of separation from his life, due to their hatred. What crime and what sin had he committed? He only finished praying in the synagogue, or the Shabbat meal, or just strolled for his pleasure on the street and suddenly – traccchhhhhhhhh! Vile miscreants decided to pester his life and he was helpless to repay them.
Jasmine didn't know about it (she's a very busy woman) until I heard the terrible news last night and rushed to break them to her. Only in the morning the media down there was kind enough to relate to the incident. And condemn the incident. It's all for the best. A senior Australian has told us that since foreigners from uncivilized cultures have entered Australia – the country has become chaotic and life is not as she remembers them, no longer as it was before these foreigners took every good part to ruin the quiet and relaxed lifestyle and impose their faith. She aimed mainly at our Islamic cousins, but also at people from Asia, which many say made Sydney a terrible place to live in. Again religion and racism raise their ugly heads. People ascribe to former Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gilliard, to make a firm statement about a year ago towards our cousins, stating that if they are unable to live quietly and without provocation – they should make themselves scarcest from her country because she won't let them mess up with the Australian lifestyle and violate it. The headline said: Australia Prime Minister Julia Gillard telling Muslim immigrants they must learn to speak the English language and adapt to Australian culture or leave the country.
Although it was claimed that her words were not said at all, they were virally forwarded by all means and received praise. If they were said or not – the fact is that peace prevails in Australia, unlike in Europe, where Islam has spread like a cancer and has taken over many places, where natives no longer have a foothold.
Jazmin was quite shocked to hear the news and the sense of insecurity of a stranger in a foreign country started seeping into her, but she has no intention of coming back so soon. The benefits of living in a country where you have financial security and you don't have that horrible noise of the government decay, the shady plans and other big troubles that come on us here, in the Promised Land, are invaluable. She believes that things will not happen again and that it was a one-off event, that peace will return and also the confidence to walk freely on the streets without hiding what you are. She repeats to me one of the interviewees, that said: "here is not Germany of the 1930s nor Russia of the 70s", and that the Australian people have no hatred towards Jews. Béatrice reminds her of the prominent anti-Semitism in France throughout the years and in most of Europe, that it had not died to this day. Jazmin reassures her that it is incomparable – Aussies have a different temperament and they were not educated on the concept of anti-Semitism and not of any kind of xenophobia. The Australian again mentions that this may have been true 20 years ago, but things have changed and all these foreigners who flooded Australia with the intention to take over against the Aussie lifestyle and not to integrate in it, have not brought a blessing on it nor its residents.
In one sentence:
We are silent. What can we say? Days will tell how and where things will turn out with hope only for the better.

It is worthwhile to watch the Honourable Julia Gilliard carry a flame-striking speech (in a typical Australian relaxed style) in the parliament in her country, where she defends women and condemns the chauvinist attitude toward them. Pay attention to the number of women occupying the sits of the house. We have a lot to learn from them, there, in the Southern hemisphere.

(Australia gay marriage still way off),
Also, more food for thought: while at a certain time she was against same-sex marriage (Same sex marriage debate divides Labour), but it's worth watching and be impressed by the culture of conversation, the ease, the respect of the other and his worldview, even if it is different to your own. A warm country, tainted with heat-waves and fires, but its inhabitants' temperament is so far away from ours.
